Medical Support Worker: Sponsorship Available

Job Summary

The Medical Support Worker will work within a multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professional including nursing staff, pharmacists, allied health professionals and medical staff. You will undertake a range of essential routine tasks under the supervision and delegated authority of the relevant consultant in charge of the clinical area in which you are employed. The post will require you to work flexibly in a shift pattern.

Main duties of the job

This post is a Key Worker role in one of our Community Mental Health Teams. This will involve working directly with a small caseload (around 25) of patients, ensuring that they have holistic care plans and supporting them to access the support needed to meet their personalised goals. Key Worker colleagues will include mental health nurses, mental health social workers and occupational therapists. The post will include supervision from the team non-medical managers (relating to the Key Worker role) as well as supervision from a consultant psychiatrist (relating to career progression).

Job responsibilities

We understand that there are many reasons that medical practitioners are not registered to practise medicine in the UK, these can vary from individuals who have relinquished their licence to practice some time ago to doctors who qualified in other countries and who have not yet fulfilled all the requirements for professional licence to practice in the UK. This may include refugee doctors or international medical graduates.

While all such doctors have some medical knowledge, it is imperative for patient safety that they are not mistaken for Registered doctors.

They must not undertake any procedures or clinical work that may only be done by a registered health care professional.

The Medical Support Worker role will offer people the opportunity to demonstrate foundation medical training competency.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant medical discipline as recognised by the GMC.
  • Post graduate qualification in specialist subject or previous experience in a registered medical role to include an internship of at least 12 months with a minimum of 3 months each in medicine and surgery or other qualifying experience.
  • Proficiency in English to a grade B in the Occupational English Test (OET) or an average mark of 7.5 in IELTS (with no single section scoring below 7). Other certification in English proficiency recognised by the GMC, for example having undertaken a course and examinations in English.

Desirable

  • Have worked in a medical capacity during the last 3/5 years.
  • Gained PLAB Part 1.

Knowledge and Experience

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a registered medical role.
  • Experience of working in a mental health setting
  • Previously worked as a medical support worker during the last 3 years

Skills Capabilities & Attributes

Desirable

  • Recognise the limits of practice that they must always comply with, notwithstanding any previous role they may have had as a fully registered doctor
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Reflect on own practice and learn from it

Disclosure and Barring Service Check
