Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Engineering Craftsperson (Electrical) to join our multi-disciplined Estates Team. The post holder will have served a recognised Electrical apprenticeship and ideally be a multi skilled having experience in building services installations including a good understanding of mechanical building services.

As part of the maintenance team the post holder will be responsible for the provision of engineering maintenance services primarily for the Trust owned buildings within the Teesside locality of the Trust.

The post will be based at Lanchester Road Hospital, Lanchester Road, Durham, DH1 5RD, however you may be required to work from other Trust sites for periods of time as the service dictates.

Main duties of the job

To assist the Trust Engineers in the provision of an efficient, cost effective engineering maintenance and repair service to all properties owned/leased by the Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS FT for the purposes of healthcare.

To carry out out planned and breakdown maintenance and installation on all electrical services, plant and equipment to all properties owned/leased by the Trust.

To undertake skilled, semi-skilled tasks and those outside of the core skills (within the competence of the post holder( to meet service needs as required.

To assist other trades and contractors, in accordance with service needs.

To ensure that all tools, equipment and machinery used in the performance of duties are tested and maintained to meet current standards at all times.

To ensure that the works are undertaken at all times in accordance with Health and Safety requirements to ensure that the environment remains safe for patients, staff, contractors and visitors to the Trust.

Participate in the Trusts out of hours on-call service.

To show commitment to, and participate in quality improvement activities.

To promote at all times a positive image of people with mental health conditions and/or learning disabilities.

To promote at all times a positive image of the Estates Department and the wider Trust.

About us

Working within a small engineering team, the role involves working in conjunction with other member of the engineering team, but also with the building team where necessary. Providing coverage in the teams area of responsibility ie Durham and Darlington and if required within the estates teams in other areas should the need arise.

Job responsibilities

Maintain and test complex building services installations and equipment’

Assist with the repair, maintenance, alteration and installation of electrical engineering systems and fittings, above and below ground.

Complete service and inspection reports and where necessary.

To assist with the training and development of engineering apprentices and semi skilled staff.

To ensure as far as is reasonably practicable and in accordance with the Trust policies, the health and safety and welfare of staff, trainees, patients, visitors, members of the public and contractors whilst they are at work on Trust premises.

Manage own allocated workload during periods off site, and work unsupervised in the course of maintenance duties.

To enable the Facilities Dept to keep pace with the demands of the Trust commitment and changes in working practices, following suitable training, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the postholder will be required to carry out directly related semi-skilled tasks and, when operational needs dictate and/or as reasonably required by the line manager, to assist with tasks outside core skills that are still within the competence of the postholder.

An out of hours ‘on call’ rota is in operation and the postholder will be required to participate in the rota system as and when necessary, to ensure continuity of service to the Trust buildings.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Successful completion of recognised electrical bias apprenticeship (electrical, heating and ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning.
  • NVQ Level 2 (Electrical Bias)or equivalent and relevant qualification
  • Numeracy and Literacy to level 2

Knowledge/Skills/Experience

Essential

  • Working knowledge of electrical systems within large complex properties.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical plant
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation.
  • Working knowledge of Electricity at Work Act.
  • Working knowledge of British Industry Standards and ACOPs relevant to the trade.

Desirable

  • Experience working in an NHS environment.
  • Significant post-apprenticeship experience in an electrical Discipline.
