Job Summary

We are seeking a confident and self-motivated Biomedical Scientist to lead and have oversight of the Health and Safety strategy across Coventry & Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS) Network.

CWPS is a managed network of laboratories hosted by University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) which is the second busiest trauma centre within the UK. In addition to the host Trust, CWPS provides services to South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust (Warwick), George Eliot Hospital Trust (Nuneaton) as well as the surrounding community. The network provides mortuary services to UHCW and Warwick Trusts.

As CWPS’ Health and Safety Manager, you will work with internal and external managers and staff to deliver the Health and Safety strategy. You will co-ordinate Health and Safety teams across all disciplines and sites to develop and maintain compliance to Key Safety indicators and ensure they are embedded in the organisation.

Your role will involve overseeing the update of CWPS policies and procedures to assist management and staff to comply with current Health and Safety legislation and best practice, leading a team of Discipline Health and Safety Leads to by providing advice and guidance to support in the management of their teams, and assisting with investigations including reporting to stakeholders and external agencies.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for someone who has good analytical and investigative acumen, with excellent communication skills and able to build interpersonal relationships. You should be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a MSc, FIBMS or IBMS Special Examination. You are also required to have comprehensive knowledge of Pathology services as you will be working across Disciplines.

You will act as a member of Network, Site specific and Infection Sciences Health and Safety committees and ensure a consistent approach to meeting format is maintained.

You will also provide expert Health and Safety advice to managers and staff in a manner that promotes ownership and facilitates problem solving at a local level.

You will support managers in preparing for the Health and Safety aspects of routine inspections such as those by the Health and Safety Executive, Counter terrorism police and UKAS.

You will participate in Root Cause Analysis investigations involving Health and Safety incidents and provide advice on corrective actions to implement to reduce risk of reoccurrence or severity of harm.

In addition, you will promote Trust health and wellbeing initiatives and develop these for CWPS staff. Work with Department and Section Managers to ensure effective implementation and maintenance.

Job responsibilities

  1. Assist the CWPS senior management team in the development and implementation of Health and Safety strategy.
  2. Develop and maintain good relationships with others external to CWPS who have responsibility for Health and Safety. This is to include Trust Health and Safety representatives, estates departments/PFI providers and Occupational Health.
  3. Perform trend analysis on safety incident reports using the Datix system and implement solutions to continuously improve safety performance.
  4. Design and schedule a programme of Health and Safety audit. Oversee compliance to the programme across the CWPS network and ensure corrective actions are implemented to address findings raised.
  5. Support Consultant and Clinical Scientist staff in co-ordinating and communicating with relevant teams to respond to national or international infectious disease outbreaks or emergence of new pathogens.
  6. Work with the Occupational Health department in supporting managers dealing with incidents affecting staff health or wellbeing.
  7. Support Department and Section Managers in the delivery of Health and Safety induction, refresher and specialist training. Perform regular audit of this training to ensure appropriate delivery is embedded across the CWPS network
